Moses Almosnino

1515–1580

Born in Salonika, Moses ben Baruch Almosnino became a prominent scholar and preacher in both his hometown and Constantinople. In 1537, he and Joseph Nasi served as political delegates to the court of the sultan. Almosnino was elected rabbi of the Neveh Shalom congregation of Sephardic Jews in that city in 1553, and of the Livyat ḥen congregation in 1560. He was distinguished for his deep knowledge of both rabbinic literature and the science of his day. Almosnino wrote in both Hebrew and Ladino. His Ladino history of the Ottoman kings, Crónica de los reyes otomanos (Chronicle of the Ottoman Kings), was first printed in 1638.
