Yaakov Orland

1914–2002

Born in Tetiiv, Ukraine, playwright, poet, and critic Yaakov Orland immigrated with his family to Mandate Palestine as a child. In 1923, they settled in Jerusalem, where he later studied at the Hebrew University. In 1936, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Orland was a member of the Haganah and served in the British army during World War II. In addition to writing theatrical and poetic works, he contributed to Hebrew literature through the translation of classic English, German, and Yiddish texts.
