Lova Eliav

1921–2010

Author, member of the Knesset, and Israel Prize laureate, Aryeh “Lova” Eliav was born in Moscow as Lev Lipschitz. In 1924, his family moved to Palestine, and in 1936, he became a fighter in the Haganah. During World War II, he served in a British artillery brigade and in the War of Independence he was a commander in the Israeli navy. Eliav played a critical role in bringing in Jews from Arab countries in the 1950s. Lova Eliav was awarded the Israel Prize in 1988.
