Benjamin Tammuz

1919–1989

Israeli novelist, journalist, painter, and sculptor Benjamin Tammuz was born in Russia and immigrated to Palestine in 1924. He studied law and economics in Tel Aviv and then art history at the Sorbonne. Tammuz designed the Tel Aviv monument to fallen Israeli pilots. He was literary editor of the daily Haaretz as well as Israel’s cultural attaché in London between 1971 and 1975. He was a writer-in-residence at Oxford University from 1979 to 1984.
