S. Yizhar
1916–2006
A novelist and children’s writer, S. Yizhar (Yizhar Smilansky) was born in Reḥovot. He fought in Israel’s War of Independence and held a seat in the Knesset. Yizhar taught education and literature at the Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University. He was a recipient of the Israel Prize, the Brenner Prize, the Bialik Prize, and the Emet Prize. Yizhar’s Days of Tsiklag (1958) is considered a classic of Jewish literature.
