ca. 1677

Image
Portrait painting of man dressed in beribboned robe, standing with one arm resting on a table covered with cloth, next to thick curtains.
Don Francisco (Abraham Israel) Lopes Suasso (ca. 1657–1710) was a prominent financier of Portuguese Jewish heritage. In 1688, he lent Prince William of Orange two million guilders, enabling him to invade England and assume the throne there, where he became King William III. In this portrait by Rembrandt’s pupil, the Dutch painter Nicolaes Maes, Suasso appears as a young man in his twenties, dressed in lavish and colorful attire in a rich interior.
