Nicolaes Maes

1634–1693

Nicolaes Maes was a Dutch painter who studied under Rembrandt. He first specialized in painting domestic scenes featuring women and children, but later turned to portraiture and developed his own style, with a palette of lighter colors than those favored by his teacher. He became a successful and sought-after portrait painter in Amsterdam.
