Di shvue (The Oath)
S. An-ski
1902
Brothers and sisters—all working poor
Wherever you might be scattered on earth
This banner’s now waiting for you, together.
Waving, wrathful, this flag is blood red.
We swear! We swear by the living and dead!
Refrain
Heaven and earth will hear us.
Bright stars will bear witness.
We swear an oath of blood and tears.
We swear, we swear, we swear this oath!
We swear a struggle for rights and freedom
Against tyrants and those who serve them.
We swear to defeat the powers of darkness,
Or as heroes, in battle, sacrifice our lives!
We swear! We swear by the living and dead!
Refrain
Heaven and earth . . .
We swear with our blood to fervently despise
The robber and murderer of the working class.
The tsar, the rulers, the capitalists:
We swear we’ll annihilate! we’ll lay waste!
We swear! We swear an oath by the living and dead!
Refrain
Heaven and earth . . .
We swear to wage this solemn war
Till the earth is completely reborn.
No poor! No rich! No master or slave!
All are equal from cradle to grave.
We swear! We swear an oath by the living and dead!
Refrain
Heaven and earth . . .
