Hermann Jalowicz

1878–1941

Born in Germany to an assimilated family, Hermann Jalowicz became an active Zionist while studying law in Berlin. During the First Zionist Congress, he advocated for a national Jewish corporeal regeneration toward Muskeljudentum (muscular Judaism) through gymnastics. Jalowicz was a member of Bar Kochba, the Jewish gymnastic association of Berlin, and a frequent editorial contributor to the association’s journal, Die jüdische Turnzeitung. He was the father of Marie Simon, a philologist who survived World War II.
