György Konrád

1933–2019

Hungarian-born György Konrád was a novelist and essayist. After graduating with a degree in literature from the Eötvös Loránd University, he was an editor for the magazine Életképek. Konrád was a dissident under the communist regime and participated in the Hungarian uprising of 1956. In 1973, he was arrested and lost his job. In 1990 he was elected president of the International PEN Club, and in 1997 became director of the Art Academy in Berlin. He earned the Herder Prize, the Charlemagne Prize, and the National Jewish Book Award.
