Doktor Veitsman

Mark Vishniak was born in Moscow and graduated from Moscow University. Inspired by the political events of 1905, he was a socialist revolutionary, and wrote in Russian radical periodicals. In 1918 he was secretary of the Constituent Assembly, but the assembly was disbanded but hours after its creation. After the Bolshevik takeover in Crimea, Vishniak left for Paris, living there from 1919 to 1940. He became active in Russian-speaking intellectual and political life, writing political analyses that focused on the problem of democracy under Bolshevik rule. He also co-founded the political-literary journal Sovremennye zapiski. He then moved to New York, where he remained until his death, contributing to social and political periodicals.
