Ḥaim Gamzu

1910–1982

Israeli art and drama critic Ḥaim Gamzu was born in Chernigov, Russia (now Chernihiv, Ukraine), and arrived in Palestine in 1923. Gamzu studied art and philosophy at the Sorbonne and the University of Vienna. He became director of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1962 and founded the Beit Zvi acting school in Ramat Gan. He wrote about painting, sculpture, and the theater for Haaretz and published several books. The Tel Aviv Museum’s Prize for the Advancement of the Arts is named for him.
