Gebrüder Henschel

Late 18th–Mid-19th Century

The Henschel brothers were four Breslau-born Jewish artists who collectively signed their work “Gebrüder Henschel” (Henschel Brothers): Friedrich (1781–1837); August (1783–1828/9); Wilhelm (1785–1865); and Moritz (1788–1862). Working in Berlin from around 1806 to 1829, they became widely known for their popular engravings Scenes from the Life of Goethe, as well as portraits of celebrities (including the philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte and the soprano Angelica Catalani), theatrical scenes, patriotic illustrations, and series depicting the military costumes of the Prussian and French armies.
