Isaac Rabichev
1896–1957
The painter and stage designer Isaac Rabichev was born in and studied in Kiev. Along with Issachar Ber Ryback, Abraham Manievich, Marc Chagall, and Robert Falk, he was a central figure in the artists’ division of the Kultur Lige that was established in Kiev in 1918. Their work sought to fuse traditional Jewish motifs with avant-garde techniques. He moved to Moscow in 1922 with several others in the group and turned to costume and set design for the Yiddish theater.
