Nissim Benjamin Gamlieli
1926–2003
Author and translator Nissim Benjamin Gamlieli was among the thousands of Yemenite Jews who made the arduous journey to Israel in 1948. With his collaborator Ezra Cohen, a member of the municipal council of Ramla, he collected accounts of the dangerous trek from Yemen, describing the years spent in the Geula Camp established by the Jewish Agency, on the border near Aden. Gamlieli gathered Yemenite legends and folktales, translating the stories into Hebrew in order to preserve their unique culture.
