James Salter

1925–2016

James Salter grew up in New York and graduated from West Point. His military career in Korea had a major influence on his writing of short stories, novels, and screenplays. Salter was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000 and was the recipient of the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Edith Wharton Prize, and the John Steinbeck Prize. He also earned the title of New York State Author between 1998 and 2000.
