Arthur Miller
1915–2005
Playwright Arthur Miller was born and raised in New York City. His wealthy family’s financial suffering during the Depression had a major impact on him. Miller attended the University of Michigan and then joined the Federal Theatre Project in New York; he was later called to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Miller wrote screenplays, novels, essays, and memoirs, and received the Pulitzer Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Gold Medal, the John F. Kennedy Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2003 Jerusalem Prize.
