Abraham Daninos

1797–1872

Abraham Daninos, a Sephardic Jew native to Algiers, was a pioneer of modern Arabic drama. His works fused European and Arabic dramatic styles, and were written in a mixture of colloquial and literary Arabic. In addition to writing plays, Daninos was a translator for the Civil Court of Justice in Algiers, and when the French arrived in 1830, he acted as a guide and translator. For this service he was awarded the order of Chevalier in the Legion d’honneur.
