Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich
1863–1944
Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich was born in Beregszász [today, Berehovo, Ukraine]. After gaining a reputation as a scholar and strict legalist, he was appointed as the rabbi of Shamloy, Hungary, in 1899. He was a strong conservative leader, exerting influence in city politics, and wrote multiple commentaries on the Tanakh and the Talmud. He was bitterly opposed to Zionism. He remained with his congregation and was murdered in Auschwitz.
