Yitshak (Ignacy) Schiper

1884–1943

Yitshak (Ignacy) Schiper (Schipper) was born in Tarnów and received both a traditional and a secular education, studying at universities in Kraków and Vienna. From 1919 to 1927, he represented the Po‘ale Tsiyon and then the General Zionists in the Sejm. He served on the YIVO Historical Section and coedited the multivolume Zydzi w Polsce Odrodzonej (Jews in Reborn Poland; 1932–1935). Schiper continued his work as an archivist in the Warsaw ghetto, both officially and underground, through the Oyneg Shabes ghetto archive. After the Warsaw ghetto uprising, he was murdered in Majdanek.
