Jacob Mazeh

1859–1924

Jacob Mazeh was born in Mogilev, Belorussia, to an observant family and studied at Moscow University. He wrote for Ha-Melits and founded the Bene Tsiyon society in Moscow, and also visited Palestine. Mazeh was appointed state rabbi of Moscow in 1893. He publicly defended Mendel Beilis during the 1913 blood-libel trial. Following the Bolshevik Revolution, Mazeh remained dedicated to Zionism and the Hebrew language.
