Meir Berlin

1880–1949

Meir Berlin, whose name was later Hebraized to Bar-Ilan, was born in Volozhin (Belarus) in 1880, and studied in yeshivas and at the University of Berlin. He joined the Mizrahi movement in 1905. He served as the president of U.S. Mizrahi, and then as the president of the World Mizrahi Center. Berlin settled in Jerusalem in the 1920s, where he founded the daily newspaper Hatzofeh in 1937 and the Entsiklopediya talmudit (Talmudic Encyclopedia) in 1942.
