Israel That Erred, Remains Israel
Jacob Israël de Haan
1915
He read my songs of sorrow and mourning . . .
Has one Poet wreaked against his People
If I erred through licentious ways,
If I erred, vain and unfaithful?
Thus mourns my song. No word of comfort can soften
The cruel repentance for the Act committed.
I have not enough tears to atone
What Act and dream committed of greedy evil.
No word of comfort? No, your word has brought me comfort,
“Israel that erred, remains Israel,
Your song still shines, that no Sorrow can dull.”
And remembering this has given my heart pause
Of his steady suffering, of his agonizing remorse,
And murmuring I sing this song of it.
