Raphael Samuel ben Jacob Arditti

1812–1887

The son of a rabbi, Raphael Samuel Arditti (Shmuel Arditi) was an important merchant and rabbi in Salonika. He served as ḥakham bashi (chief rabbi) of the city. As a scholar and rabbinic judge, he is best remembered for his efforts to bring together the Salonikan Jewish community. A collection of his responsa, Sefer divre Shmuel, was published posthumously in 1891.
