Ilya Ginzburg

1859–1939

Born into a poor, traditional family in Grodno in the Russian Empire (today in Belarus), Ilya Ginzburg was raised in Vilna. In 1870, he accepted an apprenticeship in Mark Antokolsky’s St. Petersburg studio after meeting the acclaimed sculptor that year. Ginzburg graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1885 following a few years of study under Antokolsky and Filippo Colarossi in Paris. From 1918 to 1925, Ginzburg was a professor and dean of Vkhutemas (the Petrograd State Free Art Studios). Ginzburg was most recognized for his miniatures and busts of Russian cultural figures, including Leo Tolstoy, V. Stasov, Anton Rubinstein, and Maxim Gorky.
