Protestrabiner
The word Protestrabiner, meaning “Protest Rabbis,” was devised by Theodor Herzl in July 1897 to refer to the five German Jewish rabbis who wrote a scathing letter in the name of the German Rabbinical Association opposing Zionism and the Zionist Congress. These protesting rabbis included both Orthodox and Reform (liberal) clergy.
