Katie Magnus
1844–1924
Katie Manuel, born Katie Emanuel in Portsmouth, England in 1844, became Lady Katie Magnus upon her marriage to Sir Philip Magnus. An author of articles and books, she was also heavily involved in communal and charitable work. She sat on various committees of the West London Berkeley Street Synagogue, dedicated much of her time to the Jews’ Deaf and Dumb House, and served as treasurer of the Jewish Girls’ Club. Magnus wrote extensively about Jewish topics and Jewish history. Indeed, her works include rewritings of biblical stories for young readers and surveys of Jewish history. Some of her books achieved significant popularity and were reprinted in several editions, both in England and in the United States.
