Ferenc Molnár
1878–1952
Born to a middle-class family in Budapest, Ferenc Molnár studied law before beginning his writing career. He published his first works at age nineteen, and during World War I, he served as a war correspondent. Primarily known as a playwright, Molnár achieved a great deal of success with his plays, several of which were translated and performed, to good reviews, for German- and English-speaking audiences. In the original Hungarian, Molnár’s language is often bitingly cynical, although adaptations of his work tend to emphasize the romantic aspects of his plots.
