Henri Nathansen

1868–1944

Brought up in Copenhagen in a merchant family, Henri Nathansen initially pursued a legal career before starting to write and direct for the theater. Indenfor murene (Within the Walls), Nathansen’s most famous work, debuted at the Royal Danish Theatre in 1912 under his direction. His body of work takes family conflict across generations as its main subject, in particular featuring Jewish youth confronting their family traditions.
