Sherwin Wine

1928–2007

Born in Detroit, Sherwin Wine was ordained as a Reform rabbi but broke with the movement. Wine was the founder of Humanistic Judaism, establishing its first congregation in Birmingham, Michigan, in the 1960s. Also the founder of the Center for New Thinking, Wine was named Humanist of the Year in 2003 by the American Humanist Association.
