Ovadia Yosef

1920–2013

Born in Iraq, Ovadia Yosef came to pre-statehood Israel at age four. He served as the Sephardic chief rabbi of Israel from 1973 to 1983. Ovadia Yosef was the spiritual leader of the Shas movement, and is considered one of the greatest contemporary poskim (commentators and interpreters of Jewish religious law).
