Immanuel Jakobovits
1921–1999
Born in Königsberg, Germany, Immanuel Jakobovits grew up in Berlin and London. After holding rabbinical positions in Ireland and New York, Jakobovits served as Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth from 1967 until 1991. A pioneer in the field of Jewish medical ethics, he also encouraged Jewish education and peace in the Middle East. Jakobovits was the first rabbi to be knighted in Great Britain.
