Pierre Vidal-Naquet

1930–2006

French historian Vidal-Naquet exposed the use of torture by the French army during the Algerian War of Independence. In 1944 his family was deported to Auschwitz and he spent the war in hiding. He then returned to Paris, earned a degree in history, and specialized in Ancient Greece. He taught and served as a research director at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Vidal-Naquet was a supporter of Middle East peace efforts.
