Jacobo Timerman

1923–1999

Jacobo Timerman was a journalist, author, and human rights activist. Born in Bar, Ukraine, he immigrated to Argentina in 1928. In 1971, he founded the left-leaning newspaper La Opinión, critical of Argentina’s military junta. In 1977 he was arrested by military forces and was imprisoned and tortured. In 1979 he was released and exiled to Israel; he also lived in Madrid and New York. Timerman returned to Argentina in 1984.
