Edmond Jabès

1912–1991

Poet and writer Edmond Jabès was born and raised in Cairo. In 1956, when Egypt ousted its Jewish population during the Suez Crisis, Jabès was forced to leave and moved to Paris. He was considered one of the most important literary figures to write in French after World War II. He won the Prix des Critiques in 1972 and France’s National Grand Prize for Poetry in 1987.
