Golda Meir

1898–1978

Born in Kiev and brought up in Milwaukee, Golda Meir (Meyerson) moved to a kibbutz in 1921. She was one of the signatories to Israel’s Declaration of Independence. Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, after having served as foreign minister. Her administration was in power during the Yom Kippur War; she subsequently resigned in 1974.
