Mike and Doug Starn

b. 1961

Twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn, born in New Jersey, are American photographers and filmmakers whose work combines traditionally separate disciplines such as sculpture, photography, painting, video, and installation. Among their public commissions is a 250-foot work for the South Ferry subway station terminal in New York City (2009). They have exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, including the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial (1987). The Starns received National Endowment for the Arts grants (1987, 1995), the International Center for Photography’s Infinity Award for Fine Art Photography (1992), and were artists in residence at NASA in the 1990s.
