Gerald Stern

b. 1925

Born in Pittsburgh and living today in New Jersey, Gerald Stern has written award-winning, confessional poetry. A teacher at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Stern was elected as a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets in 2006. His many honors include the Ruth Lilly Prize, four National Endowment for the Arts grants, the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the 1998 National Book Award.
