Marek Halter

b. 1936

Polish-born Marek Halter fled to the Soviet Union during the Holocaust and emigrated to France in 1950, where he became a novelist, painter, and the founder of the International Committee for a Negotiated Peace Agreement in the Near East, which helped organize the first official meetings between Israelis and Palestinians. Halter’s novels have received such awards as the Prix Aujourd’hui and the Prix du Livre Inter.
