Tuviah ha-Kohen

1652–1729

Born in Metz to a family of physicians, Tuviah ha-Kohen was one of the first two Jews to study in the faculty of medicine at the University of Frankfurt an der Oder. Since he was not able to graduate there, he completed his studies at the University of Padua in Italy. After graduating, he served as a doctor in various cities. In 1715, he settled in Jerusalem, where he worked as a doctor until his death. His book Ma‘aseh Tuvyah (The Story of Tuviah), printed in Venice in 1708, is considered the most important Hebrew medical book of his time.
