Moses Albelda
ca. 1500–before 1583
Moses ben Jacob Albelda was probably born in Spain. During his difficult life, he traveled considerably, serving as rabbi and preaching in communities throughout the Ottoman Empire, among them Valona and Salonika. According to his own testimony, he was also a dayan (rabbinic judge) and head of a yeshiva. He was rabbi of Arta in Greece in 1531 and later of Valona. His homilies—collected into a book and titled Darash Moshe—were published after his death by his son, Judah. The volume includes an elegy for Joseph Karo, who died in 1575.
