Ephraim Solomon Luntshitz

1550–1619

A renowned preacher from a young age and fierce moral and social critic, Ephraim Solomon ben Aaron Luntshitz studied in the highly esteemed yeshiva of Solomon Luria (the Maharshal). Luntshitz preached throughout Poland and served as a yeshiva head in Lvov and then, from 1604, in Prague. He reported adding “Solomon” to his name at a time of grave illness. Luntshitz’s published books, which include biblical commentary, stem in various ways from his preaching.
