Israel de Curiel

1501–1573

Israel de Curiel was one of the three principal rabbis in Safed at the time of Joseph Karo, author of the Shulḥan ‘arukh (Set Table). Little is known about his life, but it is assumed he was born in Spain shortly before the expulsion. He lived in Safed for around forty years. None of his writings was published during his lifetime. He wrote responsa, biblical commentaries, sermons, and works of philosophy.
