Meir Benveniste

Unknown

Little is known about Meir ben Samuel Benveniste, and until recently, even his identification as an author was not confirmed. He was descended from a prominent Sephardic family that made its way to Salonika. Seder nashim (Order of Women) is a prayer book in Ladino intended for women. Besides the daily prayers, it also includes blessings and other instructions regarding daily deeds. Although Benveniste’s name is not mentioned in the book, he notes elsewhere that he composed the prayer book around 1565. He is also the author of a Ladino version of the Shulḥan ‘arukh (1568), as well as other books.
