The Sephardic Community of Fez

The book of the regulations of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews in Fez covers the period between the end of the fifteenth and the middle of the eighteenth century. It also includes court verdicts and responsa. Most of the regulations, which concern issues of family and marital law, sumptuary laws, education, financial issues, and communal institutions, were formulated between 1494 and 1518, but some were recorded as late as the eighteenth century. Carried by Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin, these regulations later influenced the organization of other communities in North Africa.
