Esther Browne

d. 1708

Esther Browne was a merchant who continued the business of her late husband, Saul Pardo (anglicized as “Browne”), who had been ḥazan (cantor) of New York’s Congregation Shearith Israel, founded in 1654, also known today as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. Members of the family, including four children who survived Esther, also lived for significant periods in Curaçao.
