Rosa Romanina

17th Century

Rosa Romanina was the widow of Moses Guastalla of Rivarolo. Although possibly illiterate herself, Rosa dictated her last will and testament to a scribe in Verona between the years 1639 and 1642. The document provides a fascinating window to life in the ghetto of Verona. Rosa owned extensive property, which she received as her dowry and inheritance. She bequeathed her property principally to women, especially on her maternal side, among them her niece. Her will also includes a request that the pious duties after her death be fulfilled. As Rosa was concerned that her son would waste his inheritance, she appointed guardians and placed restrictions on the property left to him. Her will also refers to an ongoing feud with a neighbor.
