Menashe Margolis

Born in Berdichev, Ukraine, Menashe Margolis received a traditional religious education and training in secular studies, eventually working as a lawyer in Odessa. He assumed a leadership position among that city’s Jews and became a prominent figure in the development of the Jewish press in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Russian. In addition to his active involvement in periodicals such as Kol mevaser, Ha-melits, Voskhod, and serving as a founding editor of the Odessa Russian Jewish paper Den’, Margolis also translated works into Russian and Yiddish. He wrote Russian-language books on Jewish history and on educational reform and contributed to the Russian-language Evreiskaia entsiklopediia (The Jewish Encyclopedia).
