Salomón López Fonseca

1853–1935

Salomón López Fonseca was a Sephardic Jew descended from a prominent Sephardic rabbinic family. A businessman, philanthropist, public official, and poet, López Fonseca played an important role in the Jewish community of Coro, Venezuela. He was active in Coro’s two literary societies, Alegría (Happiness) and Armonía (Harmony). A prizewinner in South American literary competitions, López Fonseca was admired for his translations of Italian poets as well as for his own poems.
