Isadore Twersky
1930–1997
Isadore Twersky, a Boston-born Orthodox rabbi and professor, was a scion of the Tolner Hasidic dynasty and a son-in-law of Rabbi Dr. Joseph B. Soloveitchik. He received his academic training at Harvard University, where he began teaching Hebrew literature and philosophy in 1956, becoming the chair of Harvard’s Department of Near Eastern Languages in 1965. From 1978 to 1993 he was the director of Harvard’s Center for Jewish Studies. His expertise included medieval rabbinic literature and philosophy, especially that of Maimonides.
